Living life on the edge, ice climbing
When I came to Patagonia, I expected to wind down after my travels through Antarctica, after what has been a very hectic year of travel.

The tropical country of Argentina seems to have it all – paradise beaches, natural wonders, vibrant cities, ice fields, cave systems and alpine retreats. With over 23 provinces it can be difficult to know where to begin when planning your holiday. So, here’s our pick of the best destinations to visit in Argentina.
Buenos Aires, where glam marries grit at the heart of Argentina. A seductive city with a passion for tango and a love for food. Captivating Latin and underground jazz pulse through the night as sleepless bars come alive all over town. Baroque churches sit aside bohemian, Parisian cafes, and aromatic parrillas grill meats roadside, filling the streets with fragrant spices.
Colonial streets lead to the historic heart, filled with religious and cultural landmarks. Visit La Plaza Mayo to soak up Argentina’s fascinating history, spend the night in Palermo experiencing the intense dance shows. And when the party’s over, tuck into one of Argentina’s famous cuts at an all-night steak house.
The Avenia 9 de Julio in Buenos Aries is the widest avenue in the world at 460 feet wide.
Mendoza, the heart of Argentina’s wine industry, is one of the prettiest cities in the country and an excellent base for outdoor activities. Skiing, horseback riding, river rafting, hiking the vast plateaus or scaling the soaring Aconcagua. Spend a day biking through the grape-filled vineyards, tasting the famed Malbec with the Argentine Andes as your backdrop. The leafy streets, charming Spanish plazas and unique setting make Mendoza a highlight of any tour to Argentina.
Ibera Wetlands is the largest freshwater reservoir in South America, located in northeast Argentina. Explore the versatile agriculture and Atlantic rainforests that are unique to the area. Enjoy the slow pace, gliding through pristine wetlands, dressed in waterlilies and filled with rich wildlife.
Take a horse-drawn canoe across the swamps and lagoons looking out for cattle gathering at the water’s edge. Ibera Wetlands is a remote, hidden gem of sleepy backwaters and mossy marshlands housing alligators, marsh deer and an abundant bird population.
Overlooking Parque Nacional Los Glaciares is the quaint village of El Chalten. The rustic charm and laid back vibe makes it the perfect base for hiking Patagonia. Trek to Mount Fitz Roy which dominates the El Chalten skyline from every angle, or take a glacier boat ride to Lago Viedma. The nearby hiking trails are also some of the best in Argentina, attracting thousands each year.
Situated in the dusty Lerma Valley is the sophisticated city of Salta. This charming, colonial city is filled with plazas lined with palm trees, where cafes spill out into the cobbled streets. Thousands of tourists flock to the city each year to enjoy the laid-back small-town vibe before heading out into the wild northwest to explore the Andean landscape. Take to the hills by car, foot or horse.
The quintessential Argentine resort town of Mar del Plata gets more and more visitors each year. Sun-worshippers flock to enjoy the beautiful beaches and lively atmosphere. It also happens to be one of the best places in the country to surf. Art Deco buildings line the shore, tango dancers fill the clubs, and some of Argentina’s best restaurants serve up a seemingly endless supply of seafood.
Icy and still at the southernmost point of Argentina lies Ushuaia, hidden in the shadows on a steep hill in the Martial Mountains. This remote, beautiful town is the perfect base for your Patagonian adventures. Hike the closeby Tierra del Fuego National Park or walk amongst the penguins at Isla Martillo. Ushuaia is known as ‘the end of the world’ and the gateway to Antarctica. Being the closest point in South America, Ushuaia is often used as a starting point for Antarctic excursions.
Situated in the Las Sierras mountains, surrounded by rolling hills and verdant valleys, Cordoba is a welcoming city full of character. Spanish colonial architecture mixes with modern galleries and trendy boutiques. With its outskirts fringing on the mountain region, Cordoba is an excellent base for explorers looking for adventure. Go rock climbing at Los Gigantes, explore the endless cave systems in the Cerro Colorado Reserve, or go hiking in the vast wilderness right on your doorstep.
Bariloche in the Patagonia region shows Argentina’s Alpine beauty at its best. Fringing the shore of Nahuel Huapi Lake, Bariloche is surrounded by dense, thousand-year-old forests, soaring mountains and glistening water. Explore the quaint Swiss chocolatiers, the Gothic cathedrals and the Swiss alpine-style architecture. Bariloche is also a prime spot for skiing during the winter months, with over 120 km of sparkling piste to explore.
El Calafate is surrounded by some of the most natural, rustic beauty in the country. Home to the Perito Moreno Glacier, thousands of travellers visit this small town to watch the icebergs crack and crash into the icy water below. Resting between El Chalten and the Torres del Paine, it’s the perfect spot for basing your Patagonia excursions. The town itself is comprised of paved streets, souvenir shops, museums and dotted with adorable wooden houses.
A place featuring on many bucket lists is the roaring Iguazu Falls, one of the most stunning natural wonders in the world. Straddling the border between Argentina and Brazil, the Iguazu falls are surrounded by dense jungle teeming with wildlife. You cannot begin to imagine the intensity of 275 waterfalls until you are standing at the base, in all its glory. Take the tourist train through the jungle or tour the base of the falls by boat. It’s also a great place to go hiking.
Situated on the coast of Golfo Nuevo, lies Puerto Madryn – the gateway to the Peninsula Valdes. Puerto Madryn is famous for its whale watching. Visit from July to September when the southern right whales swim right up to the shore and penguins pack the rocks of Punta Tombo. Although it’s not all about the wildlife – the sloping dunes and pristine beaches are perfect for sun worshippers looking to relax in the heat.
