Georgia is one of those rare countries which is still considered an untouched, hidden gem of Eastern Europe. The country lives on some of the most heavenly landscapes in the world and is blessed with a huge selection of national parks for people to explore. If you’re into hiking, light walking, wildlife or flora, Georgia should be top of your list. Visiting this country and not seeing the wild, stark, beauty of Georgia’s national parks would mean missing out on a true part of Georgia. Here’s our pick of some of the best national parks in Georiga.

Tbilisi National Park

Tbilisi National Park was the first in Georgia and should not be missed if you’re planning on staying in the Capital. Being only an hours drive from Tbilisi, the national park makes the perfect day trip to escape the bustling city. Hike one of the three trails: the big viewpoint trail, the Mamkoda medium loop and the Mamkoda difficult loop, or ride along one of the many cycling routes through the magical, untouched forest.

Tusheti National Park

Tusheti is the perfect national park to visit if you really want to get under the skin of Georgia’s culture. The Tusheti National Park has 11 functioning trails which wind their way through UNESCO World Heritage sites, villages, medieval towers, alpine lakes and stunning, green meadows. The raw, natural beauty of the area is unsurpassed and time seems to have come to a standstill, giving you a real taste of Georgia’s past.

Kazbegi National Park

Often regarded as one of Georgia’s most beautiful national parks, Kazbegi really is a sight to behold. Trek one of the many trails carving through the soaring mountains, verdant landscapes and medieval villages. Or if you don’t fancy the walk, hire a 4×4 and have one of the most epic drives of your life. Journey through valleys, from village to village, stopping to appreciate cultural sites along the way such as the Garbani Church or the Sameba Temple.

Kolkheti National Park

 Kolkheti National Park is definitely not one to be missed if you’re into birdwatching. This stunning landscape located in western Georgia, encompasses lakes, Black Sea coastlines, rivers, wet meadows, wetland lilies and grasslands. The perfect combination to attract an incredible array of wildlife. Ride a boat or hire some kayaks and drift along the Pichori River and the Lake Paliastomi, keeping your eye out for some of the 194 bird species living in the area.

Mtirala National Park

Mtirala National Park is one of the best in Georgia with 2 fantastic hiking trails which take about a day, or two if you’d like to camp. Situated in the middle of the Black Sea and the Adjara Mountains, it has an incredible landscape to explore. From dark, dense forests to cascading waterfalls and serene, tree-lined lakes. Mtirala National Park is absolutely enchanting and definitely not one to be missed.

Javakheti National Park

Javakheti National Park lies inside the Javakheti Protected Areas in Southern Georgia, along the border of Armenia and Turkey. One of the biggest draws to this area are the stunning array of lakes on the Javakheti Plateau. The areas surrounding the lakes are coated in spots of natural forests, volcanic landscapes, alpine meadows and stretches of grassland. The park is home to an abundance of regional and migratory birds as well as a variety of other fauna and flora. As well as wildlife spotting, it’s a great place for hiking, horse riding and cycling.

Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park

 Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park is one of the largest in the country, ranging across six districts. The park has a variety of trails suitable for all levels of fitness and can range from day treks to multi-day hikes which can be done on foot or horseback. Considered one of the most developed national parks in Georgia, you can find shelters, picnic spots and campsites dotted all along the trails.

Vashlovani National Park

Vashlovani National Park lies in Eastern Georgia and is comprised of rugged, beautiful landscapes. The forests are covered with pistachio and apple trees making the place feel like a giant orchard. The park has a bounty of trails to explore ranging between one to seven days and for all levels of fitness. Campsites, firespots and picnic areas are dotted along all of the trails.
