What is the Caxirola?
Football match or street party If you have traveleld to South America you would have heard the caxirola!Â
Pronounced cashy rolla, this beloved instrument is a must at any gathering, but is particularly well-known by all South American football fans! Even more than than the dreaded vuvuzela. (Yes, that instrument sounds like a swarm of very angry bees). The caxirola was the official musical instrument for the 2014 World Cup. It was designed by Carlinhos Brown and the Ministry of Sports.
A round instrument with slots to place your fingers for the best grip, the caxirola is easy to use.
Where did it come from?
Critics of the instrument have argued that the instrument is an adaptation of the caxixi. The caxixi is a percussion instrument in the form of a closed basket with a flat bottom. It is filled with seeds or other small particles. It can be found across Africa and South America, but mainly in Brazil and Cuba,Â
What does the Caxirola sound like?
A little like a rattle, the sound is similar to a maraca. You would have to play over 2,000 caxirola instruments to create the same deafening sound of the vuvuzela.
