Cost of travel in Vietnam

Southeast Asia is known for being one of the cheapest holiday destinations in the world. From well priced flights, cheap accommodation and budget friendly (and simply amazing) street food, Vietnam is a hub for budget travellers.

Entrance to many museums and attractions is relatively low-cost for many travellers.

The average amount you will need per day will vary depending on your travel habits and adventure expectations; however $50 or equivalent should be more than enough for most travellers.

If you choose to eat at street food stalls, you can get by with much less!

G Adventures also offers a fantastic range of holiday options.

Cost of Food & Drink

Prices can range from 15,000 to 50,000 Dong for a bowl of Pho from a street vendor. Street stalls and local markets will have the cheapest options. You can get an excellent meal for a few dollars. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant can set you back around 50,000 Dong, a mid-range restaurant 200,000 Dong, and high-end eateries can set you back around 400,000. Western restaurants will have similar prices to what you would pay back home, since a lot of the food is imported. A local beer is around 20,000, which is well under a dollar.

Markets

There are often no price tags on items in the markets in Vietnam. But don’t worry. That just means there are no fixed prices. Everything is negotiable.  Traders and shoppers alike expect to haggle! Prices can be inflated for tourists; the rule of thumb is to offer 50% of what they quote. If it is a stern no, then slowly increase the cost.

But, bear in mind, however much you love a bargain, always haggle respectfully!

Admission Fees

Fees can vary from place to place. Most temples are free of charge but donations are welcome.

Transport

Transport in Vietnam is generally cheap. Taxis are the most common form of getting around the cities for tourists, some are metered but often they will claim it doesn’t work. Always agree a price before getting in. You should be looking at around 10,000 for every kilometre you do. Grab is a common app used in Vietnam and shows you the upfront cost, you can then pay with card via the app or in cash. It is also one of the cheapest ways to get around as drivers cannot simply inflate the price just for tourists.

Other costs you may incur on your travels in Vietnam include donations to temples and sacred sites, souvenirs and incidental items such as medicine or phone SIM cards.
