1) Research, research, research
If you want to see the wildebeest migration in Kenya or hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu it’s always worth researching a few months in advance. High season dates often sell out or in the case of the Inca Trail or Gorilla Trek in Uganda, permits may sell out in advance. We are not saying you need to be a walking phrase book but it is always handy to know a few phrases especially as for single traveller holidays.
