Solo travel tips for over 20s holidays

Travelling solo can be one of the most daring, empowering and inspiring experiences you ever do. If it’s your first time going solo it can be daunting, but it shouldn’t be! Over 60% of our tours are booked by solo travellers, so you should never feel alone. All tours are accompanied by an expert Tucan Travel Tour Leader so don’t worry, you’re in safe hands! It’s always good to do some research before travelling, but here are a few of our top tips for travelling solo:

1) Know the rules and local customs

Before visiting any new country, make sure you brush up on the local rules and customs. For example in Thailand you must wear the appropriate dress and remove your shoes when entering a temple, and in India you only eat with your right hand. It always bodes well to do some research before you leave!

2) Try the local food

From earthy bowls of Pho in Vietnam, to homely goulash in Hungary, to warm gooey Stroopwafels in the Netherlands, food is one of the most enjoyable ways to experience a different culture! Eat the spicy thalis in India, taste the snails in France and if you’re feeling really adventurous, try the fermented fish in Iceland!

3) Learn some key phrases

No matter where in the world you are, and even if English is a widely spoken language, it always works in your favour to learn a few key phrases. People will really appreciate you making the effort and it always serves you well if you’re trying to haggle on goods!

4) Break the ice!

Being in a group of people you don’t know can have its awkward moments! We suggest bringing a pack of cards or a small game with you as an easy way to break the ice. It also doubles up as a great time-killer for those long bus journeys and rainy days waiting for the weather to let up!

5) Get out of your comfort zone

One of the best things about a group tour for single travellers under 30, is that it gives you a reason to leave your comfort zone and do things you wouldn’t if you were on your own. If you’re in a group, you might be more likely to dive into that lake for a swim, or try out your newly learnt Hindi phrases without feeling silly. You often end up experiencing more than you would if you were alone!

Solo Holidays for over 20s: FAQs

Travelling solo can be a bit intimidating and sometimes stressful – especially if it’s your first time! Group tours are the perfect way to take out the hassle of planning a trip on your own. You’ll be with a group of like-minded people which can also give you that little boost you need to step outside of your comfort zone!

Accommodation varies from place to place but usually we stick to small locally-owned guesthouses, hostels and hotels to give you the most authentic experience possible. You will likely be sharing with one or two others from the same sex, however you can upgrade if you would prefer your own room.

Of course! Group tours don’t have to mean being herded from attraction to attraction with no time to yourself. We make sure to factor in enough free time so you can also go off on your own adventures!

We aim to take out as much of the hassle as possible so that you are free to relax, explore and see the sites – so when it comes to travel, we have everything covered! Depending on where you are, expect a mixture of flights, private overland trucks, local buses and even a tuk-tuks if you’re travelling to Asia!

Most of our tours offer the option to book a couple of extra nights stay at the arrival or departure destinations so can make the most of the city you’re in.

No. Although Tucan Travel do not specialise in selling flights, our travel consultants can arrange them for you to match the start and end dates of your tour.
